Nashville Rings in 2010

When you come to Nashville, you’ll want to split your time between the Opryland area and downtown. The Gaylord Opryland Resort is always a magnificent place to stay with over 2800 rooms, but if you visit over the Christmas and New Years season, you’ll be treated to an amazing experience for the entire family. It’s been called one of the “Ten Great Places to catch up with Santa” by USA today and named one of the top ten places in the world to spend Christmas by Travel and Leisure Magazine.  A Country Christmas features more than 2 million lights and more than a dozen shows and attractions including, ICE featuring A Charlie Brown Christmas by Charles Schulz and The Radio City Christmas Spectacular featuring the Radio city Rockettes, plus Louise Mandrall’s Joy to the World Christmas dinner and show, and A Country Christmas on the Cumberland.  In addition to the Christmas themed attractions and shows, you’ll want to see a performance at the legendary Grand Ole Opry, which is held at its original Ryman Auditorium location during the holidays, line dance at the Wildhorse Saloon, and board the General Jackson Showboat.   On board the world’s largest showboat, you’ll be treated to a four course dinner and fantastic show taking you through the history of country music in the glittering two-story Victorian theater.   The Gaylord Opryland makes getting around really easy with a shuttle to the Grand Ole Opry, Opry Mills, the General Jackson Showboat, and downtown to the Wildhorse Saloon as well as to and from the airport.

For New Years Eve, after our phenomenal dinner at The Capitol Grille inside the Hermitage Hotel, (I’ll tell you about it in my next entry) we split our time between downtown and the Opryland.  The Wildhorse Saloon featured live music by Ira Dean and J.C. Anderson, silk aerialist performers, a strolling magician, and stilt walkers.  There was so much more to do downtown at all of the bars and clubs, even a free concert outside the Hard Rock Café with a guitar drop at midnight, but we decided to head back to the warm Gaylord Opryland and hit the party at Fuse, Nashville’s only Vegas-style nightclub and the Triple Dance Party which was held in their large ballroom and featured a dance floor surrounded by three stages of non-stop music including an 80’s band, country band and Top 40 dance band.   For the families with children, there were free activities at the Delta Island Party, including face painting, music, and the Brightest Star Fountain Show.  After a night full of entertainment and partying, what could be better than New Years Day brunch at the Waters Edge buffet in the Delta Atrium?  The buffet, which is open year round, had an omelet station, oatmeal, a selection of fresh fruit and pastries, a carving station, and many other treats to ensure no one left hungry.

So while the Gaylord Opryland is extra special around the holiday season, it should be a definite anytime of the year if you’ve never been.

New Years in Nashville!

This year I wanted to do something really fun for New Years, possibly travel to a fun city or tropical island, but I didn’t want to break the bank on airfare. Then I received an email from the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau with a list of parties and events going on in Nashville for New Years and I realized it was a no brainer! I got really excited because I love Nashville! I’ve been there twice so far and each time I have a great time…downtown has so many fun bars with live bands, the Wildhorse Saloon with it’s line dancing, Jacks BBQ, Fuse Nightclub at the Opryland, and venues such as the Bluebird Cafe, which showcases established and up and coming talent. There is always such a great energy! Still looking for last minute plans? Here’s what happening in Nashville:

Montauk Memories

img_5607I’m always looking for great places to visit within driving distance, especially during the summer when there is so much to do in the Northeast.  This past weekend I took a trip to Montauk, which took us two and a half hours from NYC, leaving on Friday around 9pm and coming back Sunday around the same time.  We really lucked out and did not hit any traffic, so if you hate sitting in a parking lot, you may want to leave at those times.

We stayed at the moderately priced Ocean Colony Beach and Tennis Club, one of the Dunes properties, which was perfect for our weekend stay.  Our room was a studio suite with an efficiency kitchen, living and dining area, so you had all of the amenities of home if you wanted to cook your own food or bring home some leftovers. Each suite has a private terrace with chairs.   img_5650They also offer  larger suites for families or friends who want to getaway together.  We overlooked the pool which was a nice size for swimming laps or just hanging out and not feeling overcrowded.  The resort has two tennis courts, but probably the most appealing feature is its 400 foot private beach.  The waves were really high and there was a rip current, but we still enjoyed throwing the frisbee around and swimming for a little while.    img_5653

There are some great seafood restaurants in Montauk, overlooking the harbor or the ocean,  others in town, and if you prefer, there are fish markets like St. Peter’s Catch where you pick your fish, have them  cook it, and you can enjoy it on their picnic tables outside or bring it to the beach.  img_5599The food at St. Peter’s was delicious and they have a great lobster lunch special for $15.99.  Another great restaurant was the Fishbar, but the wait can be really long, so if you have a lot of time, you’ll appreciate the good food, but if you are not in the mood to wait for over an hour, there are other good restaurants as well.  Gosmans Dock is a popular one on the harbor, but we didn’t eat there.  In town, Shagwong has been a staple with locals and tourists for over 40 years and John’s Drive-In has great homemade ice cream!  Fudge n’  Stuff has 30 flavors of homemade fudge and fresh chocolates made daily on the premises, so of course, I had to sample some of their specialties as well.

You can see some spectacular sunsets in Montauk and a great spot facing west is the Montauket.  With it’s spectacular cliff side location overlooking Fort Pond Bay, the Montauket is a great place to get a drink and serves lunch and dinner.  img_5644

Depending on your interests, you can spend the day relaxing on the beach or you can rent non-motorized and motorized boats such a kayaks, canoes, sailboats, jet skis and waterski boats.  If you’re a kiteboarder, you’ll love Napeague Harbor, one of the most popular places in the northeast for kitesurfing, with 360 degrees of sandy, uncrowded shoreline, and miles of shallow, waist-deep water.  If you’ve always wanted to learn, there is usually someone there offering lessons.  Of course if you’re coming to Montauk, you must climb the Montauk Point Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in New York State, situated on the eastern most point of Long Island with views of Block Island.

img_5620If you’re looking for a fun, romantic, or family weekend getaway, Montauk is the perfect beach town with a mixture of great restaurants, excellent homemade fudge and ice cream!  After all, what else do you really need?  You may want to visit in the fall, as it’s still beautiful and the resort rates drop, so you can find yourself an excellent deal.

The Perfect Family Getaway So Close to Home!

img_5596So many of us are looking for that perfect getaway, but can’t afford the time or airfare to go anywhere far away and if it’s going to be just for a weekend, we don’t want to spend several hours on the road. Well, I found the perfect family getaway just over two hours from NYC, Philly, and NJ, maybe less, depending on where you live in New Jersey. The Skytop Lodge caters to families, but if you’re single and looking for a weekend filled with a mix of activities and some rest and relaxation, this is the place for you!img_5557

The resort is rich in history and many families have been coming here for years. Located in the Pocono Mountains, this is definitely not what you may think of when you think the Poconos. There are no heart shaped pools or champagne glass Jacuzzis in the rooms. This homey, yet classy resort lets you choose an all-inclusive package which will cover all of your activities and meals during your stay. There are two dining options, the Windsor Dining Room at the historic main lodge and the Lakeview Dining Room at the Inn at Skytop. You can opt to stay in the main lodge, at the Inn, or in a cottage. There are two lakes on the resort’s property, one where you can swim and pull yourself up a drifting climbing wall, and the other where you can rent paddleboats, rowboats, kayaks, and canoes.  img_5594There are over 30 miles of hiking trails and three waterfalls around the lake and throughout the resort, and they offer guided hikes as well as mountain bike rentals and tours. There is also a shooting center, indoor and outdoor pool, archery, fitness center, various fitness classes, guided yoga walks, tennis courts, a meditation garden, and an adventure center featuring paintball, rock climbing, geo caching, mountain bike courses, and wilderness survival classes. Most of the activities are included in the price, but some carry a minimal additional fee. Be sure you pick up your skylights sheet at the front desk which lists all of the day’s organized activities.

Even though the resort caters to families, you’ll feel perfectly comfortable there on your own or with some friends. I spent the first day by myself, and enjoyed the wonderful spa and a lobster tail dinner at the Inn. The staff is really friendly, so even though I ate by myself, I never felt alone.

img_5506The next day, my cousin and  his son joined me at Skytop. My cousin’s son is 8 and he had a blast paddleboating, shooting paintball targets, and building a turtle sand castle by the lake. The resort also offers Camp in the Clouds for kids ages 3-12 with plenty of activities such as hayrides, scavenger hunts, and water and land sports, for those parents who would like to have some alone time.  img_5521

I am so happy to have discovered this place…it was so much fun! I love to keep active, and in one day I took an “arms and abs” fitness class, went paddleboating, had a delicious lunch buffet, shot paintballs in their gallery, swam in the lake, took a mountain bike on the trail around the lake and around the resort, and had a phenomenal dinner of red snapper, sweet potato mash, and pea pods. The food was quite good, something you may not usually associate with the Poconos. After dinner, we were treated to a fireworks display for the 4th of July and a fun, patriotic band played while everyone danced and ate cookies and punch. Then people grabbed their partners for the elimination dance and the Grand March, which seems to be a Saturday night tradition at img_5580the lodge. There is a game room downstairs with three ping pong tables, two pool tables, air hockey, mini golf, and video games. Also on that level is a tea shop which serves tea, coffee, and desserts, and a tap room for causal food and drinks.

So if you’re looking for the ideal summer getaway close to home for yourself, you and a friend or partner, or your family, head to the Skytop Lodge and you’ll be surrounded by beauty, adventure, and relaxation in no time at all!

South Jersey Spa Seeker

As an avid traveler, I always love reading up on cool destinations, and of course, awesome spas.  I was always envious of the people who worked on the tv show, Spa Finder, and their sole job was to seek out the best spas.  Well, I decided to take it upon myself to find the best spas in New Jersey, and this week I’m focusing on South Jersey.

As someone  with a back injury, I’ve tried everything, including chiropractic care, physical therapy, prolotherapy, and awhile ago, massage.  However, I always viewed massage as an indulgence and therefore would only get one if on vacation or if someone gave me a gift certificate.   But recently, I came across a promotion for a 60 minute massage for just $50 at the Laurel Creek Salon and Day Spa in Mount Laurel, NJ.   I had just returned from Barbados and was very sore from surfing and felt run down, so I decided I was going to treat myself.   I was just hoping the therapist would be good, because you never know what it will be like when trying someone new.  Well, Kelly was incredible!  She took the time to find out exactly where the pain was and she dug deep into those muscles!   Since I opted for a mix between Swedish and deep tissue, there were parts of the massage that were a little more painful as expected, but I left there feeling phenomenal.  She told me most of my pain was not just from surfing, which I pretty much knew.  She advised I come at least once a month to work through everything, but just ten days later, I was tight again from all of my workouts, so I called her up, she squeezed me in, and again, another amazing treatment.

We all need to have a balance in life, and massage is so beneficial for so many reasons.  I’m so happy to have found an incredible therapist for such a reasonable rate.  Even at full prices, the 60 minute massage is not going to break your bank.  She also does pre-natal, reflexology, Reiki, a desert stone massage, the raindrop technique, and couples massages.  The full service salon also offers facials, peels, makeup, waxing, manicures, pedicures, and hair services such as color, highlights, cuts and blow outs.  I look forward to going back real soon to try out one of their other treatments.  I’ll be sure to report back!

Why save the massage for when you’re away?  With all the day to day stress, you usually need it most when you’re home.  With a salon that is so conveniently located off of 295, why not escape, even if it’s just for an hour?  The effects will last for  days afterwards.  Check out their website at www.laurelcreeksalonanddayspa.com.

Wine and Wellness at Crystal Springs Resort

Today was a day of wellness and rejuvenation with a great mix of  wine, champagne, and food!

The morning started with a mother/daughter treatment at the brand new Reflections Spa, which just opened a few weeks ago.   It’s ceiling is comprised of 8000 quartz crystals, the walls are of a fire-inspired art glass and together they are  a spectacular vision.  ReflectionsSpaThe treatments themselves were also amazing.  I chose a facial and my mom, a massage.  We arrived at the spa a half an hour before our appointments, changed into our robes, and had the opportunity to enjoy the steam room, an antioxidant drink, or champagne and truffles in the lounge.   During my facial with Debbie, she looked over my skin, discussed my questions, and then chose the perfect blend of antioxidant products.   The combination of massage and steam was so relaxing and helped my face and body feel completely rejuvenated.  My mom chose the Chardonnay Vinotherapy Massage, which was just one of the many creative treatments offered.  Afterward, we met in a common area where we rubbed our feet in salt and then spun our chairs around and soaked them in warm water, while sipping more champagne and indulging in truffles!

Basketball CourtIn the afternoon, my brother and I took the free shuttle over to the family friendly Minerals Resort and Spa, also part of the Crystal Springs Resort, which caters to families, and has a large gym, tennis, basketball, and racquetball quarts, and seven indoor and outdoor heated pools.   Although I’m more of a pilates than a yoga girl, I decided to check out the yoga class, which catered to all levels.  BiosphereWe then came back to the Grand Cascades Lodge and met my parents at the Biosphere, and spent some time in the indoor and outdoor heated pool, jacuzzi, steam room, and sauna.   I almost had to remind myself that I was in NJ, as the biosphere gives off a Caribbean resort vibe, as everyone was having fun and sipping frozen drinks prepared poolside.

We quickly showered up and got changed for the “Grand Tasting,” part of the NJ Food and Wine Festival sponsored by Moët Hennessey USA.   The event consisted of exclusive wines and champagnes from around the world as well as many food stations including a raw bar filled with shrimp cocktail, oysters, clams, and crab legs.   Guests were entertained for the evening by a 17 piece orchestra who played everything from big band to classic standards to show tunes. MichelleMoet

As a first time visitor to Crystal Springs Resort, I have to say I am extremely impressed with the array of activities and ammenties this New Jersey Jewel has to offer.  This is the perfect place for a couples escape, a girlfriends getaway, ski trip, golf weekend or a family trip.   Plus if you’re thinking about where to have your wedding, there are beautiful rooms and outdoor landscapes for your special day.   With a getaway like this so close to home, I look forward to coming back over the summer to enjoy the outdoor activities, and every season thereafter!

I’ve Escaped to Paradise and I’m Close to Home!

CascadesFrontAs I mentioned in my last blog entry, I love finding escapes close to home, so I was looking forward to coming to the Crystal Springs Resort this weekend. In beautiful Sussex County, it is the perfect escape, easily accessible from all regions of the state. It really is a hidden jewel. I arrived in the mid afternoon and driving into the property was a truly spectacular scene. The interior of the Grand Cascades Lodge proves to be just as breathtaking as the nature that surrounds it. The majestic Adirondack style lodge is a 4-Star property and has only been opened since July 2007.

Since I am with my family this weekend, we’re staying in a one bedroom suite which consists of one standard hotel room with two queen beds, and another room with a king bed, a kitchen complete with granite countertops, and our own washer and dryer. kitchenThere is a fireplace in the living room and a spacious terrace overlooking the mountains. RoomThe bathroom is the suite is huge, with a shower and a separate jacuzzi tub. And the best part about the rooms? They have Tempurpedic mattresses! I am so excited to go to sleep tonight!

While waiting for my family to arrive today, I went to the gym and did a little cardio on their modern elliptical machines, each equipped with its own television, and then went into the Biosphere, which is a major complex consisting of a pool, hot tub, sauna, and steam room. I enjoyed them all! At last I was relaxing, which is a very difficult thing for me to do! The 10,000 square foot Biosphere consists of two exotic free form pools, heated year round. A translucent retractable roof permits the sun’s rays to penetrate through, allowing a winter tan, which is always fun! There’s also an aquarium with colorful fish and lush plants which make you feel like you’re in a tropical rainforest.

For dinner, we were going to eat at the trademark Restaurant Lator, known for its incredible wine collection, but because there was a VIP dinner being held there, we ate at the Crystal Tavern, whose name fit the atmosphere perfectly. In addition to the elegant and world class food, the atmosphere was casual, filled with live-music. While the atmosphere was casual with a live band playing, the food andraw bar drinks were out of this world.

To begin the meal, we started with the Raw Bar Sampler, Shrimp Cocktail, and Tuna Taratare. The oysters, clams, shrimp, and crab legs that came on this sampler were deliciously fresh, free of unnecessary tampering that may have inhibited the natural taste of the sea. For a soup, my parents tried the New England Clam Chowder, which they seem to sample most places they go, and this one got a big thumbs up. As health nuts, my brother and I ordered the Arugula and Friseé Salad, which was topped with a gently crisp duck confit, radicchio, roasted cashews, Saladand honey-sherry vinaigrette. I was very impressed with the larger than expected size of the salad and the perfect combination of ingredients. For entrees, my family was split between the Seared Sea Scallops and the King Salmon. The scallops, which were enhanced with a maderira-mirin glaze, capers, shallots, almonds; and accompanied by a cauliflower purée and Israeli couscous, did not disappoint. The scallops were remarkably satisfying, some of the best I have had in my life.

Scallops

The second entree was King Salmon, which was cedar plank grilled and topped with a citrus beurre blanc sauce, with braised fennel, wild rice, radicchio, and scallions was also mouthwatering in its surprisingly rich flavor. SalmonThe mixed drinks were just as creative, infused with fruits such as pomegranate, kiwi, and guava.

As if all of this fantastic food was not enough, we had to try dessert. If our previous courses were any indication of what was to come, I knew it would be worth it. I enjoyed the light and tasty rasberry, blood orange, and green apple sorbet. In what was one of the most creative presentations I have ever seen, the Triolgie of Flower Pot Cakes took three decadent chocolate treats and delivered them in adorable ceramic flower pots. Top these two off with a towering chocolate brownie sundae, and it was the perfect way to end the day.Sorbet

Special thanks to the Chef D’Cuisine Rusty Obra for his extremely well prepared meal, and our friendly and always attentive waitress Sage, who helped make it an evening to remember for all of us. I’m really looking forward to mother and daughter time at the brand new “Reflections” spa tomorrow and the Grand Tasting NJ Food and Wine Festival in the evening.

Escape this Weekend….to New Jersey!!!

As many of you know, I love to travel…anywhere and everywhere.  I have a huge list of places I’d like to visit and look forward to each time I can cross one off the list.  Well, I can never really cross it off the list because usually I want to go back and see more of what I didn’t see the first time!  However, I get really excited when I don’t actually have to get on an airplane, but can  just drive an hour or two to a really cool resort right here in New Jersey.   New Jersey has so many wonderful retreats from Bed and Breakfasts in Cape May to casinos in Atlantic City to luxury resorts near Mountain Creek.   My find for this week is the Crystal Springs Resort in Vernon, NJ.   This coming weekend from the 13th-15th,  they are presenting the NJ Food and Wine Festival in conjunction with Moet Hennessy USA.

By no means am I a wine connoisseur, but the event looks like it will be a lot of fun and they are offering great packages to stay at Crystal Springs Resort for the weekend.  The resort consists of the Grand Cascades Lodge and the Mineral Resort and Spa.   The Grand Cascades Lodge is a 4 star property and perfect for a romantic getaway.  The Mineral Resort and Spa has a huge sports complex and caters to families. The Biosphere is an indoor pool complex with an underground aquarium, vortex pools and caves, and tropical foliage and the unique glass enclosure allows for year-round tanning.   In addition to the many amenitiesfor both children and adults, the new spa, Reflections, that just opened, and the incredible array of restaurants, they offer a free shuttle service that takes you to each of the hotels and Mountain Creek if you’d like to take advantage of the snow activities.

So if you’re looking for a last minute escape, thrown in with what should be an incredible food and wine festival, pack your bag and head to the Crystal Springs Resort in Vernon, NJ!

So Many Places to Go, People to See…

This weekend I attended the NY Times Travel Show at the Javits Center in New York City, and boy, did it inspire me!  I already love to travel, but seeing all of these incredible destinations under one roof really made me want to drop everything and travel the world!  The Caribbean, Europe, South and Latin America, Southeast Asia, Australia, and so many places right here in the United States!   The Philippine and Thai booths were giving incredible ten minute massages, while the Caribbean booths like Anguilla were offering up rum punch and rum cake.  There were also parts of the convention hall devoted to luxury and spa travel, as well as adventure companies for those looking to stay active and try new things.

There were seminars throughout the day in two rooms and the Travel Channel’s Samantha Brown and Andrew Zimmern talked about their shows and how they landed what most would consider the best job in the world!  There was also a seminar on travel writing run by Max Hartshorne from GoNomad.com, and Arthur and Pauline Frommer spoke about the best way to travel despite the economy.

While I was very exhilerated by the prospect of traveling all over the world, I was also excited to talk with the New Jersey tourism board and those representing Cape May.  As a relationship talk show host in New Jersey, I am always looking for romantic getaways close to home.  There are some beautiful bed and breakfasts and hotels right here in New Jersey.   For those who may not be able to spend the extra money on airfare right now, these are the perfect options to steal away for a little romance.  In the peak season, people from out of state make the Jersey Shore their vacation spot, so why not take advantage of it’s beauty when it’s less crowded?  If you have a romantic spot in New Jersey where you like to go to get away for a few days or a week, I want to hear about it.  As I discover new resorts and inns here in the Garden State, I will tell you all about them!

Ignite Your Relationship!

Whether you’ve just started dating or have been married for awhile with kids, everyone needs a little jolt in their relationship from time to time.  While it may be tough to get away for a long period of time, all you need is one weekend and a trip to the Poconos for an unforgettable experience.  I recently stayed at the Cove Haven Resort, nestled on a cove of Pennsylvania’s largest man-made lake, Lake Wallenpaupack.  The resort is one of the three all-inclusive Caesars Pocono Resorts, which means you can pay for one and play at all three, which are located throughout the Poconos.

Most of us have heard or seen pictures of heart shaped pools and champagne glass jacuzzis.  Well, that’s exactly what you’ll get at Cove Haven!  When you drive into the property, you’ll probably get a good laugh, as the signs remind you of the 60s, and the rooms are definitely what the pictures show!  While some may think it’s cheesy, it’s exactly what you’d expect in the Poconos.  Our room had a round bed surrounded my mirrors on the ceiling and walls, a heart-shaped swimming pool, sauna, massage table, and a 7 foot champagne glass jacuzzi.  How could you not get in the mood with a room like this?!

Since the resort is all-inclusive, a breakfast buffet and dinner are included, as well as all of the activities on the property, including snowmobiling, indoor archery, ice skating, roller skating, racquetball, the swimming pools, and fitness center.  They also plan fun activities throughout the day, such as the X-rated Match Game and basketball tournaments.  After dinner, there is nightly entertainment, usually consisting of a comedian and a band.

While there’s plenty to do at the resort, you can spend a day at the nearby outlets, go skiing, or try your luck at  the Mount Airy Casino.    So instead of freezing in your home,  get your blood flowing at Cove Haven, Paradise Stream, or Pocono Palace!
